01/17/2005: "Orkut - Brasil?"

I've spent a few hours on Orkut in the last few days. As you may know, I'm not a huge fan of the social networking sites, but I was an early member of Friendster and Ryze, and as the other sites appeared, I joined LinkedIn and Orkut. And recently, ML completed a job where we were asked to name a social-networking category killer site, but more on that later. Yet of these, LinkedIn is the one I'm most interested in, though I still go back to Ryze on occasion.

But here's my observation: There are a hell of a lot of Brazilians on Orkut. Why is that? I started doing searches in "All Languages" and was searching for communities of like-minded "punks." Amazingly, 9/10s of the sites were in Portuguese. Random examples: Skate e punk rock BR, Supla - "O PUNKqueca," Meninos Punks sao Bonitos, Tem Punk Ae?, Eu ja fui punk xixi, Jesus Cristo e Punk! And it goes on and on.
